1. Examine the the material. I personally prefer leather. A well made leather bag will feel durable, thick and soft when touching. Some designers these days make bags out of man made material. These bags should also have a very similar feel to leather. Smell it. Real leather will have a distinctive smell. A cheap product will feel like plastic and will be thin to touch.
2. Look inside the handbag.  A well made designer, well known brand merchandise will have heavy duty (for example satin, leather)  inner lining. The stitching inside the bag should be with a quality thread
and perfectly straight and well finished. There should always be a tag with the name of the designer. That tag should be stitched in straight and perfectly finished. A glued in tag, imperfectly printed tag, hanging out thread will suggest that you are looking at black market item. Some designers or brands will also have the name of the brand printed on the inner lining.
3. Inspect the handles. The handles should be made out of durable, thick heavy material. Stitching should be perfectly straight, well finished. No thread should show and the finish should not be peeling.
